The best way to be sure I'm getting you the right information is to take clear photos that really show what you're eating. Keep in mind that any time you share a photo with me, you can include clarifying language in the same text (be sure to send the image and your comment at the same time).
Describe Your Photo
Before sending your photo, add some descriptive text. Want to tell me more about your salad dressing or clarify that your meal is eggplant parmesan, not chicken? A quick comment on your photo will help me be even more accurate. Eating at a restaurant? Share the name of the restaurant and the item you select from the menu.
Make sure your photo isn't blurry, obstructed or too dark. Retake and resend if in doubt.
If you're eating something that's layered (think burrito), you can move things around so all the items that are in the meal are visible.
If you're eating something mixed or blended - like a smoothie, juice or soup - you can include the ingredients you used for the recipe in the photo along with your food item.
If you're eating something with a label (a store-bought smoothie, a snack bar or any packaged item), take a photo that clearly shows the brand and product name -- that way I can be sure I get those calories right.
Help Me See Your Portion
When I see your food photo, I assume that you've eaten everything in that photo. For a more tailored estimate, show me the portion you're planning to eat right next to the full size portion OR add a comment to your photo that says "Ate 1 cup."
