Ever found yourself thinking, “There’s no way for me to stick with healthy foods when I'm eating out all weekend … I’ll just start fresh on Monday"?
We’ve all been there. It’s hard to know what’s in your food when someone else prepares it, right? Even if you've done a great job all week, tracking your calories and thinking about eating healthy, it's easy to feel overwhelmed when you step in to a restaurant and are faced with so many (often less than healthy) choices. Or maybe you think you've chosen something good for you, only to find out later that it was processed or full of extra salt and fat.
Whether you're facing a weekend of restaurant hopping, grabbing a meal out after work or celebrating an important occasion, AVA has you covered. AVA has pulled together a list of restaurants in The Hub and recommended healthy menu items from each to help cut down extra calories, while boosting your nutritional intake. And remember, a balanced plate is 1/2 veggies, 1/4 whole grain, and 1/4 lean protein.
Click the map markers below to see AVA's picks for healthy menu items at some of the most popular restaurants in and around Boston.
Choose protein. Eggs, nuts and seeds, and Greek yogurt are all great options.
Include Veggies. With breakfast, it’s easy to skip the green stuff, so make sure to show them some love in the morning too.
Healthy carbs. Include whole grain based carbs, like 100% whole wheat toast or oatmeal.
Go for color. Try to choose options that are colorful. The more color, the more antioxidants and powerful nutrients.
Add protein to salads. Adding farro or quinoa to any salad adds more fiber and protein.
Replace creamy dressings. Instead, choose an olive oil based option and try not to soak your salad. Let the veggies breathe!
Skip the fried food. Choose steamed, baked , grilled, or stir-fried over fried foods.
Seafood is a yes. Select seafood as an entree to get a great amount of protein and omega 3 healthy fatty acids.
Go red sauce instead of white. Tomato based sauces or pestos are healthier options. Limit creamy or heavy and rich sauces.
